What is the automatic license renewal option?

The automatic license renewal option ensures you have uninterrupted access to the most current version of Stata. When you purchase an annual Stata license with the automatic renewal option, you are authorizing StataCorp to automatically charge your credit card the annual renewal fee up to two weeks prior to the expiration date of your license. You do not have to keep up with renewal dates, and StataCorp will continue to renew your license until you choose to cancel.

Which credit card will you charge for the renewal?

StataCorp will charge the credit card you used for your purchase of the annual license. If your credit card expires during the license term, we will contact you two weeks prior to the expiration date of your license to obtain an updated expiration date or new credit card information. We will also contact you if there are any other issues with the credit card on file.

I did not select the automatic license renewal option during the ordering process, can I add it now?

Yes; contact StataCorp at [email protected] or 1-979-696-4600. Reference your order number or your Stata serial number when you contact us. We will confirm your payment method and sign you up for future automatic renewals. Your Stata license must not have expired to exercise this option.

How can I cancel my automatic license renewal?

Contact StataCorp at [email protected] or 1-979-696-4600. Reference your order number or your Stata serial number when you contact us, and we will cancel your renewal. If you cancel, previous charges will not be refunded, but you may continue to use your Stata license until the end of the term you paid for. To cancel prior to the first renewal fee, you must contact StataCorp at least 30 days prior to the expiration date of your Stata license.

After my license is renewed, what do I need to do?

We will send you a new License and Activation Key with the confirmation of your renewal charge, and you will need to install the new license key to ensure uninterrupted access to Stata. Visit https://www.stata.com/install-guide to view the Stata installation guide.

Please contact us at [email protected] with your Stata license serial number, order number, or other purchase information so we can locate and provide your license information.

How do I reinstall Stata on my new computer or operating system?

Log in to your account on stata.com to acces your login credentials or contact us at [email protected] for new download credentials.

I'm getting the error message "The serial number, code, and authorization are inconsistent" or the "Next" button is failing to illuminate (is grayed out, not clickable).

There may be a typo in the license information or additional hidden formatting characters if you are copying/pasting from a PDF. Please check your codes and enter them again. Mistaking a zero (0) for the letter "O" or the number 1 for the letter "l" are common errors.

If you continue to experience this issue, please submit a screenshot of the information you are inputting to [email protected] with the error message.

I'm getting the error message "username and password are invalid."

There are several things that may cause this behavior.

Please follow the steps below to reduce errors.

  • Copy and paste the username and password to prevent typos.

  • Make certain there are no extra spaces at the beginning or end of either the username or password.

  • Make certain the browser is allowing cookies. You may also wish to try a more download friendly browser (like Firefox or Google Chrome).

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

I'm getting the error message "This app can't run on this PC."

The Stata download is a large file, so the issue may be that only part of the file has been downloaded. Download again using an alternative browser, such as Firefox or Chrome, with your virus protection software turned off. You may also try improving your Internet connection or using a separate computer/connection entirely to complete the download and then transferring to your target machine.

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

I cannot find my Stata after I have successfully installed it.

Windows

Right-click on Start and follow

File Explorer > C: > Program Files > StataNow19

The Stata executable is in the StataNow19 folder.

Mac

From the Dock, go to

Finder > Applications > Stata

The Stata executable is in the Stata folder.

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

I'm getting the error message "Your license is not applicable to this Stata. The most likely reason you are seeing this message is that you have installed a version of Stata that does not match the license information entered."

It seems as though your Stata software is reading a license file from a previous installation or the wrong information was entered during initialization. You will need to remove the STATA.LIC file from the Stata directory to reinitialize your program with the correct information.

For step-by-step directions on deleting this file and reinitializing your Stata license, please see our online guide.

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

I'm getting the error message "Your license is not applicable to this Stata. You have installed Stata/MP but your license is for Stata/SE. Please uninstall this copy of Stata. Then, reinstall Stata after checking your license to see what edition of Stata you should install."

You may uninstall and reinstall. Or you will need to rerun the installer and select "Modify", invoking the Installation Wizard, which allows you to select the correct edition (BE/SE/MP) and complete your installation.

Follow our step-by-step directions to uninstall, and then follow our installation directions to reinstall.

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

I'm getting the error message "Your license is not applicable to this Stata. The most likely reason you are seeing this message is that you have installed a version of Stata which is newer than the license information you have entered. If you have up-to-date license information, please enter it now."

You have installed Stata 19 but are using Stata 18 license information. You will need to obtain the updated Stata 19 license information.

Or you may have installed the wrong package. If this is the case, you will need to install your older package (Stata 18) and initialize that program with your current license information.

If you need further assistance, please contact us at [email protected].

Mac: Why do I receive the error "cannot write in directory /Applications/Stata/ado/base/0" when updating? Or why do I receive the error "cannot write the file /Applications/Stata/Stata.lic" when installing on a Mac?

The reason that Stata cannot take the codes is that it does not have the correct permissions. This usually occurs when the owner permissions are currently set to another user. If this is the case you can either log into the Mac under the administrator account or change the group so that your current account can make changes.

To change the permissions you should follow the instruction in the FAQ Changing Stata folder permissions to update Stata.

For a few alternative methods to resolve this issue, refer to Apple support's advice.

Windows: Why do I receive the error "cannot open C:\Program Files (x86)\Stata19\STATA.LIC" on a Windows machine?

This error message usually occurs when the account you're installing from does not have the correct permissions. Please ensure you are attempting your installation on the administrative account of the machine.

Once you have confirmed you have the correct permissions, right click on the Stata executable in the Stata install directory, and select Run as Administrator. Then, you can enter your authorization information, etc., and Stata can create the Stata.lic file in this folder.
