On October 26, 2007, Apple Inc. released Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), the latest
version of their operating system.
Both Stata 10 and Stata 9 have been tested on Mac OS X 10.5, and we have
found no problems with installing and running Stata.
The importance of Apple’s new operating system is that 10.5 will be
its first, true 64-bit version of Mac OS X when running on a Mac with a
64-bit processor such as a Core 2 Duo or a PowerPC G5. Work has already
begun on a 64-bit version of Stata 10 for the Macintosh, and it is expected
to be ready during the second half of 2008. An announcement will be made once
it is available.
In the meantime, the current 32-bit versions of Stata 9 and 10 will work
under Mac OS X 10.5 even if you are on a 64-bit Mac. Versions of Stata
prior to Stata 9 will also work as long as you run them on Macs with PowerPC
processors. We do not recommend running versions of Stata prior to Stata 9
on Intel-based Macs (regardless of the operating system version) because of
the poor mathematical accuracy of Rosetta, Apple’s PowerPC emulator
for Intel-based Macs.
