Thanks to Richard. The force option worked perfectly. Out of
curiousity I re-ran the query:

. update query
(contacting http://www.stata.com)

Stata executable
    folder: C:\Program Files\Stata9\
    name of file: wsestata.exe
    currently installed: 20 Jan 2006
    latest available: 15 Sep 2005

Ado-file updates
    folder: C:\Program Files\Stata9\ado\updates\
    names of files: (various)
    currently installed: 20 Jan 2006
    latest available: 20 Jan 2006

Recommendation
Do nothing; all files up to date.
Glad it worked. Here is what I get:

. update query
(contacting http://www.stata.com)

Stata executable
folder: C:\Program Files\Stata9\
name of file: wsestata.exe
currently installed: 20 Jan 2006
latest available: 20 Jan 2006

Ado-file updates
folder: C:\Program Files\Stata9\ado\updates\
names of files: (various)
currently installed: 20 Jan 2006
latest available: 20 Jan 2006

Again, it seems really peculiar that it tells you (and not me) the latest available exe is 15 Sep 2005. Maybe Stata has multiple servers and the one you are reaching has a problem with it???
