Is there a way to compress the file w/o opening it?

Stat/Transfer optimizes automatically and writes Stata files that are the equivalent of those written after the "compress" command. It can also drop variables and/or cases. It is thus a handy tool for getting larger files into Stata.

Best,

Steve
