I don't know about -kdensity-, but I do know about -histogram-.
Within -histogram- a lot of the preparation is done by 
-twoway__histogram_gen-, see -help twoway__histogram_gen- and
David A. Harrison (2005) Stata tip 20: Generating histogram 
bin variables. The Stata Journal, 5(2): 280--281.

This command is an r-class command, so it overwrites previous
r-results.
