The report "does not work" is ambiguous here. Perhaps you mean "does not
do what I expect" or "does not do what I want". 

The Stata claim is, I believe, only that superscripts and subscripts
show up as intended on graphs. Thus 

. sysuse auto
(1978 Automobile Data)

. label var trunk "Trunk space (ft{sup:3})"

. scatter mpg trunk

will result in a superscript being shown. For any other purpose,
defining a variable label just results in the mark-up being shown as
typed, not as interpreted. 

This is consistent with the longstanding idea that whatever appears in
the Results window is in one font and shown on one line at a time.

I wonder if one can include subscripts / superscripts etc. in the label 
of a variable.
I tried:
lab var totbmc "BMC{sub:T}"
but this does not work.
