As I wrote earlier Vista is different from XP in this respect:

32-bit Vista will [often[ give you about twice more memory then XP
does, and it should not be difficult to find a PC with Vista these
days to try it out.
In any case, I'd suggest trying to switch to a 64-bit system (XP,
Vista or Linux) and 64-bit Stata.
