.

JMP 7 for OS X did not become 64 bit for this same reason. OS X users must wait until JMP version 8 for 64 bits, because like Stata, the JMP interface has to be completely rewritten.

I suspect there will be no answer to this question. But, could Stata
staff give us any idea when the 64 bit version of MP for the Mac will
be available?
This is in active development, and our best guess is that it will
be ready by the end of the year (*). It will be released as soon as it is
ready, which could be sooner or later than that date.

We are excited about adding 64-bit support to Stata for Macintosh.
Our internal testing has shown that, like 32-bit OS X, 64-bit OS X
provides a good computing environment for serious users, with the
added benefit of access to more memory that a true 64-bit platform
provides.

(*) Technical information for those interested: To move to 64-bit OS X,
we are having to do more work than would typically be necessary to
port Stata to a new 64-bit operating system. For 64-bit
applications, Apple requires that the GUI be written with the GUI
API Cocoa, whereas Stata has been written with the Carbon API.
This means that we are completely rewriting the interface using
Cocoa. While this is time-consuming, we will be able to take advantage
of features provided by Cocoa that are unavailable in Carbon.
