Take a look at whatsnew7to8.sthlp at item 2 under the heading
"What's new in the user interface".  It says:

2.  Stata now has tab-name completion.  When typing a command, type
    the first few letters of a variable name and press tab.

So it looks like we added that ability between Stata 7 and Stata 8.
