Thanks for all the replies.
Nick is right. I was using an older version of -outreg2- but following his initial answer I went back and added the "version 8.2." statement after the "program define" line and it worked. However, after Roy Wada's suggestion of an update, I updated and now evrything is working fine without having to do anything in the .ado file.
I hadn't thought of the update solution to start with because I was always left with the impression that whatever works for Stata 9 should work for Stata 10.

And to fill in two more bits of the jigsaw:
1. The person who reported the problem is
presumably using an out-of-date version.
2. I looked at the latest version of the
program, and could see a missing -version-
statement in a subroutine, and that led
to my various guesses. It's missing,
sure, but that is not actually a problem.
