If you have _any_ exact zeros, then some power less than 1 should
help. For example cube roots map 0.5 to 0.794.
The main point of the article cited by Maarten is that you can have
_any_ scale you like that makes sense; the only issue is fixing the
axis labels, and that's easier than might be thought.
