A mechanism like -sort, stable- is exactly what I'm looking for. As you
say, I could also add a column to break the ties, but that is a little
cumbersome.

I don't think this is a conceptual bug on my part. In fact, the
indeterminacy doesn't affect the correctness of the simulation (other
potential bugs apart), because the sort order within the groups will be
intentionally randomised in a subsequent step. It just hampers my
ability to test it.
