You could try converting the date field to a text string %M_d,_CY 

using the egen (varname)=concat(varname), decode command or some other means then it may work

or there are some format options withing tabout that may be definable. I think they are in the help documents

My output for the command: 

tabout date var1 var2 using a.txt, cells(freq)  

displays the Stata numerical date (19501), not my date formatting (23may2013) which is 

%M_d,_CY.  

Is tabout unable to display dates?
