I wonder if you can solve this by using Coarsened Exact Matching (cem
is from ssc), where you specify the cutpoints for the grouping
variables yourself.

Another approach might be an agglomerative hierarchical clustering
method or maybe discriminant analysis within each group. Both are
native Stata commands.
