I wrote this, and then noticed several other replies, but am still
sending it on just in case it adds anything:

 Here you can find the sketch of the code which
 will do what you want.  As for closing the log, I don't think you
need  worry, as iI am quite sure Stata  automatically closes it on
exit without any mishap!
