r(3598) is a Mata run-time error, and most of the time such errors
result from a Stata executable and ado-file directory that are out of
sync.

Mariana should type

    . update query

and follow the instructions to make sure her Stata is up-to-date and
everything is in sync.

If the problem persists, she can feel free to email me privately, or
email Stata technical support <[email protected]>.

Incidentally, the syntax Mariana gives

     . xtmixed <something> || , residuals(independent, by(n_muestrc))

is the same as if she had omitted "||", because no grouping variable for
the random effects is given. This is just fine, as what you obtain is
standard linear regression with heteroskedastic residuals, with
variances that change according to -n_muestrc-.
