I am being stupid. One can _lower_ the matsize below the default! I never have lowered matsize before. So I can set matsize to 100 like Small Stata and then see when things fail or not:

set matsize 100
webuse reading
anova  score prog / class|prog skill prog#skill / class#skill|prog / group|class#skill|prog /, dropemptycells

That's useful.
