It seems to me that you got an explanation of what you are doing wrong.
The implication is that you need to -update- or upgrade your version of
Stata for this to work.

I'm trying to convert a shp and a by following the instructions in
http://www.stata.com/support/faqs/graphics/tmap.html

Unfortunately, when I type:

shp2dta using Cont_AAd_CAOP20090, database(ptdb) coordinates(ptcoord)
genid(id)

I get the following error message

(bufio() in lmatabase, compiled by Stata 10.1, is too new to be run by
this version of Stata and so
was ignored)
              read_shp():  3499  bufio() not found
                 <istmt>:     -  function returned error
r(3499);


Am I doing anything wrong? If anyone would like to try this, the shp and
dbf files can be downloaded from
