Well, -tsspell- (SSC, Cox) is an improved version of -spell- (SSC, Cox
and Goldstein). The older program did not make use of time series
notions, and you could get away without -tsset- in using that tool (as
-help tsspell- indicates). But the -ts- operators bring so much useful
housekeeping details that it seems silly to avoid taking advantage of
them. In that respect creating a numeric 'i' variable (via -encode-)
that allows you to -tsset- or -xtset- the data is a minor inconvenience.
