I'm surprised they didn't advise you to copy the graph as a vector
object and paste it into PowerPoint - that's what I do.  It takes some
fiddling, but you can then ungroup the graph objects (you will have to
convert to a MS Office drawing object - sometimes problematic because
it can lose shading in the conversion).  Once you have done the
ungrouping (there may be multiple groups of grouped objects) you can
select and delete the background layers.

Interestingly, once the graph is a drawing object you can do a number
of things not possible with a regular Stata graph including using
transparent shading.
