Subject: st: -panelthin- available on SSC

Following its mention yesterday in a thread started by Leny Matthew, I have written a help file for -panelthin- and posted it to Kit Baum, who has kindly posted the package on SSC.

Use -ssc- as usual to install.

-panelthin- identifies observations that would belong in a thinned panel
dataset in which observations in each panel are at least a minimum
time apart. The result is a new variable tagging observations in the
thinned dataset by 1 and others by 0.

The calculation is carried out looping up to the maximum length of panel. That is more efficient than a naïve loop over observations. If anything can figure a way of doing it without any loop, do signal.

The procedure in -panelthin- was in broad terms suggested by Rajesh Tharyan in a Statalist posting in May. The help gives the precise URL.

Stata 8 is required.
