nick, thank you for your advice. catplot was, of course, written by you. at the moment though, i still could not create the graphs that i wanted to create. perhaps it is a case of c'est la vie. i'll try a little bit more with gr bar and catplot. if i manage to create the graphs that i wanted, i'll post the commands to the list.
