i am sure there is a very simple answer but i can't find it - i have searched!

r is a float

. list if r==0.01

Try...

list if r == float(0.01)

Its all to do with precision, see -man datatypes- which has an explicit example of this situation (http://www.stata.com/help.cgi?datatypes). There is also an FAQ at http://www.stata.com/support/faqs/data/float.html
