In Stata 10, I tried this
sysuse auto, clear
histogram mpg, by(foreign) normal
without problem.

the following works fine:
histogram /varname/, kdensity by(yr)
however when I do the same with a normal distribution:
histogram /varname/, normal by(yr)
I get the following error:
error in expression: normden(x,,)*1
