Whatever it is, you will probably need to reinstall Stata (and
then -update- to Stata 9.2).
I would try the update first, just in the wild hope that would fix
everything. It sounds more serious than that though.
As far as losing downloaded programs, if they are all in a place like
c:\ado, they will likely survive ok. I sometimes copy c:\ado from
one machine on to another, so that my Stata configuration will be
consistent. The main thing to be careful of is profile.do, as the
settings in it may or may not need to differ across machines.
This would also be a good time to back up the whole computer just in
case it is dying!
