With a caveat, with regard to the material Jo has downloaded from the web. If Jo used the -ssc- or -net install- commands, those files will be placed in a directory other than the default Stata directory. Stata's update process (and reinstall process) assumes that everything in the default Stata directory is Stata's stuff, and not the user's stuff. Sometimes users manually place downloaded materials in the Stata directory, and those could be lost in an upgrade/reinstall.

Downloaded materials should be placed in the PERSONAL or PLUS directories, as defined by -adopath-.
