I am trying to count number of times each subject makes the response
of 1, 2, 3, or 4 on the 6 items of a quality of life scale. I am
using following SPSS command and am trying to find a comparable Stata
command:
count pfnum=pfalot pfsome pfneigh pfwalk1 pfbend pfslfcar (1,2,3,4)

Kit had a suggestion, but I am not sure it was exactly what Ahmed was
asking for.

Try this:
  egen pfnum = anycount(pfalot-pfslfcar) , values(1 2 3 4)

Hope this helps
