Thanks for both you and Kit's answers.

The copy of Stata I use is bought by my employer and I can't forsee
them buying it again in Unix.  I'll stick your recommendations into my
head and bring up the issue of buying some copies in Linux if when the
license is up for renewal.  Thanks!
