st: anova on ranks
.
A couple times in the past on this list, ANOVA on ranks came up. If I
remember, the Friedman was suggested, but this test is meant to
handle problems when one of the two factors is a blocking factor,
like in a repeated measures ANOVA. The ranking transformation in this
test is done within blocking levels. I recently had reason to look up
literature on use of rank transformation in a factorial design and
found these references cited in Sokal and Rohlf's Biometry text:
Scheirer CJ, Ray WS, Hare N (1976) The analysis of ranked data derived
from completely randomized factorial designs. Biometrics 32:429-434
Groggel DJ, Skillings JH (1986) Distribution-free tests for main effects
in multifactor designs. American Statistician 40:99-102
Cheers,
-Dave
