If the explanation does not lie in the limits
on string variable length according to your 
Stata -- see -help limits- --
you should politely wave the file
at Stata tech support so that they can
determine where the blame lies. 

If it's a bug in Stata 8.2, it will be 
fixed in Stata 9, but not otherwise.
