I'm curious about speed. Has all this rewriting stuff in Mata made Stata noticeably zippier for some tasks? If so, would your typical user-written routine run faster, or would it need to be rewritten in Mata as well? In particular, is -gllamm- running faster - or can it likely be made to run faster by rewriting it for Stata 9?

If Stata 9 is faster, that might make it appealing even to people who don't care that much about the added features.
