This just changes the format and not the underlying value of the variable. I actually used these commands to generate the variable q and y.

Check out the date format commands.

In the command box type:

I have one variable with quarters q (1-4) and one variable with years y (1950-2004), which I would like to combine into one single variable newvar that has the values 1999Q2 if y==2 and y==1999.

Is there any straight forward command for this?

Thanks in advance
