The primary usability feature of UNIX systems is their stability and
versatility for running the jobs in the background. This would vary
from system to system though, so you would need to figure out how
exactly this works at your computation cluster.

Check at amazon.com what would be a good introductory book on UNIX.
The best way to learn it is to install Linux on your machine and try
to live with it for a week or so :)).
