I have been successful using eststo / esttab without the prefix syntax.

That is, try
quietly regress log_trim_totalreturn_std_plus16 log_COSTR_5ya
log_trim_leverage log_trim_sale_corr i.sic12 i.date_year, vce(cluster
cusip)
eststo M1

One thing that would be great for a future update to est... would be
additional support for the use of value labels for factor variables.
There have been some workarounds posted previously to Statalist (*)
but it would be great to incorporate this into the base code.
