Friedrich's question about multi-monitor software led me to the
solution. The issue was that the external video adapter used Ctrl+1
shortcut to move around windows. This conflicted with the keyboard
shortcut for Stata command window in the script. Changing the adapter
shortcut to something else solved the problem.
