Laszlo,

As per the -sum- documentation: the -meanonly- option "suppresses the display of results and calculation of the variance." So, you are not supposed to be seeing any output.

Someone else can probably explain this better, but my understanding is that -bys- essentially just repeats the command (-sum- in this case) for every level of the by variable, so it stands to reason that only results from the last execution of -sum- (i.e., the last level of the by variable) would be available in r(). I doubt that adding -bys: - to the -sum- command suddenly makes -sum- smart enough to store the results in a matrix.

I haven't been following your previous questions on this issue very carefully, so maybe you've already covered this territory...but can you use a loop to do separate executions of -sum- for each level of the by variable and capture the results after each execution?

Regards,
Joe Canner

Hi all,

I am at a loss how to use the results of a -bys v1: sum v2, meanonly- run (try it on sysuse auto). -return list- shows only the stats from the last category. No results are displayed with the run either. Is there a trick, or this is a lost cause?

Thanks,

Laszlo
