Please ignore this post-my apologies!  I had made a mistake of my own
in  typing the formula.  With the correct formula below, the manual
and my results agree:

gen pc1try = 0.4011*std_lft500 + 0.4210*std_lft1000
+0.3664*std_lft2000+0.2809*std_lft4000+0.3433*std_rght500+0.4114*std_rght1000+0.3115*std_rght2000+0.2542*std_rght4000
