Note that Stata updates are free. If you are using Stata 12, you can
(and should) update to Stata 12.1. You can do so typing

. update all

-xls2dta- is indeed not (much) more than a (nested) foreach loop, and
will be of little help if you are using Stata 11.2 or lower.

Unfortunatly I have no answer to the original question.

xls2dta program need Stata 12.1. If you are using Stata 12 you can use
loop (foreach) command to convert xls data to Stata without using any
user written program.
