Many thanks, Nick and David, for your replies.

Nick, your suggestions were spot on. I have gotten the following to do
what I need:

1. Draw the connecting lines using -twoway pcspike-
2. Insert the labels by overlaying two -scatter- plots (one for the
before causes, one for the after causes)

For anyone else looking to accomplish something similar, I highly
recommend the Cox article mentioned in the first reply, as it has
detailed code that will help you in your formatting quest!: Cox, N.J.
2009. Paired, parallel, or profile plots for changes, correlations,
and other comparisons. Stata Journal 9(4): 621-639.

I apologise for letting a few days pass before following up; it took
my library a little while to get that Stata Journal article via
interlibrary loan.

Thanks again,
Mollie
