Under Unix, can Stata execute a shell command asynchronously?

The help hints not, but doesn't say so explicitly:

"Stata will wait for the shell to close or the
    operating_system_command to complete before continuing."

This seems to say no, but in a sense the asychronous command completes
immediately leaving a sub-process to do the work.

Simply appending "&" at the end of the command started by -!- doesn't
seem to have an effect. nohup perhaps?
