Short-circuit: plugins can use C facilities to write to ordinary files:

  #include <stdio.h>
  FILE *debugfile;
  debugfile = fopen("debugfile.txt","w+");
  fprintf(debugfile, "Going down in flames\n");
  fflush(debugfile);
