Dear Paul,
Nick is absolutely right: gzsave is from SSC, and I happen to be the
author :-). From your diagnostics my guess would be that the command
gzip is not installed in your Ubuntu. Could you try to open Ubuntu's
package manager and check this? Thanks.

I'm using stata 11 on ubuntu, and it seems that the command gzsave is

get a message from Stata suggesting all is well. However, when I go
to the directory to which I attempted to save the file, it is not
there. If I save the file using the regular save command it works
fine.
