The fact that -ml check- sometimes returns an error is enough to stop whatever you are doing and work on this problem till it is solved, even if it goes away under certain circumstances. So, yes you are doing something wrong, and since you are not telling us what you did, we cannot tell you more. To resolve this we need your to know exactly what you typed and exactly what Stata told in return.
