STATA_PREF_DIR is currently an undocumented feature that will be published in a future update of Getting Started with Stata for Unix.

xstata for Linux checks for the environment variable STATA_PREF_DIR at
launch for user preferences. If STATA_PREF_DIR is not set, it falls

login dependent. Simply defining that variable should solve the
multiple preference issue.

Ah, splendid: exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Pete...

Incidentally, where is this documented? Did I miss it in the manuals?

Dave.
