This assumes, clearly, that users have access to Filemaker Pro and Excel. Even the second is far from universally true.
Getting the duration is possible in one line within Stata, so export is not needed for that.
Getting the new variables is the trickier bit, not addressed here, but
other posts have shown that it can be done within Stata in about six lines.

an easy way is to transfer the data into a Filemaker Pro database. Then save the dates as
numbers and subtract variable 2 from variable 1. It will give you a clean number of days each
patient was in the facility. Then that data can be transferred back into Stata via Excel.
