i too have the book but i accumulated my meta-analysis commands from stata 7 days (updating them as required). just now i tried:
. use http://fmwww.bc.edu/repec/bocode/m/metan_example_data
(Example dataset for meta-analyses, Ross Harris 2006)
seems to load up somekind of data that you can then experiment the meta-analysis commands with.
