Garry Anderson noted that the new Data Editor does not tolerate
long variable names when pasting from spreadsheets such as Excel.
This behavior is not intentional. The behavior in previous
versions of Stata was to allow long variable names to be pasted,
and then transform the names into valid variable names if possible.
The original long name is then applied to the variable label. This
behavior will be restored in the upcoming executable update, which
is scheduled to occur in the next week or two.
