Despite various answers, no one mention -egen, std()- followed by 
-floor()- and -ceil(). All existing official Stata.

Generic problem: I'd like to create categorical variables for a list of
continuous variables. The categorical variables would be based upon the
z-score of each variable, such as:
Z-score of X     catX
<-2             -3
-2 ..-1         -2
-1 .. 0         -1
0               0
0.. +1          +1
1 ..2           +2
>+2             +3

If there were a way to z-transform variables, I could do an easy
recode(catX)
