st: problems with Stat/Transfer

Hello,
      I am having problems converting large Excel files(around 4000 kb)stored 
on my network drive to Stata format. The program stalls and I am forced to end 
it. However, if I copy the files to my C-drive the program seems to work fine. 
Any clues as to why this might be the case? Thanks.
