Stata runs on large data sets and it reshape at reasonably good speeds
if you have an average laptop config that is available these days. My
machine is a Pentium Core 2 Duo processor (T7500, 2.2 GHz, 4 MB L2
Cache) with 3GB of RAM and a 128 MB of Nvidia Graphics Card. Also my
hard drive is a 7200 RPM hard drive.

All my stata needs are well taken care of with this machine and it
does have a vista in it. I have no complaints with it. If you are in
US you can find a machine like the one above for around $600.

I am not doing a lot of statistical simualtions, but from time to time need to run some marginal effects for logits/ probits and when I RESHAPE some of the databases, it takes over 20 minutes in my current laptop (over 3 years old).
